Victorian Bog Oak Cameo

Bog -Wood is wood from trees that have been buried in peat bogs for hundreds or even thousands of years. It represents the early stages in the fossilization of wood. The dark color of this unique material was suitable for Victorian Mourning Jewelry. Holding this antique brooch is quite an extraordinary experience when you consider that this miniture work of art is aproximately 100 years old and the material of which it was carved is from a tree that could be up to 7000 years old!

This circular Bog Oak cameo brooch has three rings of graduated engraved patterns; the first two are intricate and quite similar in design, the third ring is engraved in a single repetative image resembling a clover. This brooch has been wonderfully carved with the image of a classic European castle reminiscent of its place of origin.

CONDITIONS AND MEASUREMENTS

This Bog Oak cameo is in excellent condition with just a slight nibble to the top of one of the turrets. The Brooch measures 1 3/4 inch in width and height. The original pinstem extends 1/8th inch past the outer edge of the brooch which is typical for this time period.
