Vulcanite Lily of the Valley Cameo Pendant

The lily of the valley signifies sweetness, purity of heart, the return of happiness, humility, and love's good fortune. It is known as the flower of May. The Lily of the Valley was also considered a symbol of our power to envision a better world.

There are many legends throughout the world that reveal the birth of this simple, sweet and fragrant flower. The most common legends being that of French and Christian origin. French legend tells the tale of Saint Leonard and the dragon of temptation, and according to Christian legend, Lily of the Valley was the sign of Christ's second coming: the tears of the Virgin Mary.

Lily of the Valley has been used for traditional medicinal purposes as well. It was believed to strengthen memory, to restore speech and as a liquor it was to be smeared on the forehead and the back of the neck, providing one with the gift of good common sense!

The vulcanisation of natural rubber with sulphur was discovered by Charles Goodyear in the USA about 1839 and was patented by Thomas Hancock in England. Mouldings in vulcanite (hard rubber) were exhibited by both Hancock and Goodyear at the Great Exhibition of 1851.The Great Exhibition was a celebration of modern industrial technology and design. Six million people visited the Exhibition!

Vulcanite became a popular material during the Victorian era, its somber color made it suitable for mourning jewelry. This deeply carved vulcanite cameo carries many sentimental meanings that could passed on as a loving gift.
